Elon Musk’s Bold Move: Federal Workers Must Submit Weekly Productivity Report or Risk Resignation

Saturday saw a major announcement from renowned entrepreneur, Elon Musk, via Twitter. He stated an expectation for every government employee to submit a summary of their accomplishments for the previous week. Consequently, a lack of response would be tantamount to a formal resignation and lead to a possible termination of employment. This policy, as per Musk’s words, is being implemented across all Federal departments, agitating several employees.

Ever since President Trump’s inauguration, many shifts have occurred within various Federal departments. There has been an especially noticeable surge in layoffs and terminations. This influx can be traced to Trump’s aggressive stance towards controlling federal expenditures. For overseeing the austerity measures, Musk has been appointed as the head.

Elon Musk didn’t shy away from expressing his ideology that every government worker should be held accountable for their respective contributions to the nation’s progress. As per his recently announced edict, these workers would be required to detail their ‘achievements’ from the past week. A failure to participate would imply renunciation of their roles.

Elon Musk amplified on his tweet with more specifics, making it clear that the approaching request for information isn’t optional for the federal workforce. An email inquiring about their productivity will be received by the staff members in due course. The stipulation that a non-response is equivalent to a resignation was further reiterated.

This bold step drew the attention of President Trump earlier on the same day. He lauded Musk’s efforts, although he expressed his desire to see an even more dynamic approach.
Soon after, Musk replied affirmatively and hinted at his upcoming email communication with the federal employees.

Now this isn’t any regular email. It demands that federal workers elucidate on their past week’s accomplishments, preferably in ‘five bullet points’. As a protocol, their respective supervisors should also be kept in the loop. The constraint of a deadline, set for Monday 11:59 p.m. EST, added to the strict nature of this proposition.

Although the exact reach of this email within the vast federal workforce remains unknown, the mandate has certainly generated a wave of reactions. It is quite clear that the email could potentially hit the inboxes of every federal employee, given the power wielded by Musk in the DOGE.

These developments come on the heels of numerous changes within federal departments, particularly an increase in layoffs and dismissals. The pattern could be credited to President Trump, who assumed power in January, with a strong focus on optimizing federal spending. For this critical role, he enlisted Elon Musk, one of the biggest names in business, to spearhead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The negative consequences of this initiative have been harsh, with countless federal employees losing their jobs. The American federal government, employing approximately 2.4 million citizens, is indeed a large workforce. Interestingly, 20% of these employees are based in the Washington, D.C. region. However, the exact figure representing the number of dismissals and terminations, an outcome of these operations, is still shrouded in ambiguity.

As per latest data on the DOGE’s public portal, up until February 17, 2025, this entire exercise has yielded savings of $55 billion. Several actions have contributed to these successful figures. The website highlights a list including, but not limited to, the detection and erasure of fraud, the termination or re-negotiation of contracts or leases, the liquidation of assets, the cancellation of grants, reductions in workforce, program improvements, and regulatory savings. The future of this department certainly seems promising.
