Aundré Bumgardner, a Democratic state representative from Connecticut, was arrested on March 2, 2025, for driving under the influence (DUI) and reckless driving. The arrest took place in Groton, where Bumgardner serves as a representative for the 41st District, covering parts of Groton and Stonington.
According to the arrest report, an officer noticed Bumgardner’s vehicle in the breakdown lane with a flat tire. Upon approaching, the officer observed signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech. Despite denying drinking, Bumgardner failed multiple field sobriety tests, and a breathalyzer test later revealed his blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.
During the arrest, Bumgardner was described as nervous and uncooperative. His driver’s license was confiscated for 24 hours, and he was later released with a citation to appear in court on March 14.
House Speaker Matt Ritter responded swiftly to the arrest, stating his disappointment and suspending Bumgardner from all committee assignments and leadership positions. His arrest makes him the fourth Connecticut state representative in the last two years to be charged with DUI, following similar incidents involving Geoff Luxenberg, Robin Comey, and Quentin Williams, the latter of whom was killed in a crash after attending a government event.
In a public statement, Bumgardner apologized for his actions, saying he takes full responsibility and is grateful that no one was harmed. He acknowledged his lapse in judgment and the disappointment it caused his constituents and colleagues.
The incident has sparked discussions among Connecticut lawmakers about the need to address substance abuse and accountability among elected officials. Some officials have called for stronger measures and support systems to ensure public trust and prevent similar incidents in the future.
