Chris Cuomo Fired From CNN Over Brother’s Scandal

CNN announced Saturday that Chris Cuomo has been fired “effective immediately” after it was revealed he aided his brother, Andrew, in a scandal.

“Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother’s defense,” said CNN’s statement. “We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately”.

The statement also said “While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light. Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate”.

Cuomo also made a statement on his termination, saying “This is not how I want my time at CNN to end but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother”.

So let me now say as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did as CNN’s #1 show in the most competitive time slot. I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work.

Chris Cuomo

Cuomo was suspended from his position last week after information was released by the New York attorney general’s investigation into his brother, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Transcripts from the investigation revealed that Chris Cuomo had said he would reach out to media sources to find out about new accusers against his brother.

The “additional information” that CNN reported is a sexual misconduct allegation against the former CNN anchor from an old co-worker. It is unclear if the new allegation influenced CNN’s decision to fire Cuomo.

Debra Katz, the accuser’s lawyer, told the New York Times that her client “came forward because she was disgusted by Chris Cuomo’s on-air statements in response to the allegations made against his brother, Governor Andrew Cuomo”.

Katz specifically quoted the anchor from March 1 when he said “I have always cared very deeply about these issues, and profoundly so. I just wanted to tell you that”.

Cuomo was previously accused by Shelley Ross in September of touching her inappropriately at a party in 2005.
