Representative Chip Roy has introduced the FACE Act Repeal Act, legislation aimed at eliminating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. The FACE Act, enacted in 1994, prohibits obstructing access to reproductive health services through force, threats, or physical obstruction. However, critics argue the law has been weaponized by the Department of Justice against pro-life activists.

Roy and his supporters claim the FACE Act disproportionately targets peaceful pro-life advocates, citing reports that a vast majority of prosecutions under the law have been against individuals opposing abortion. The bill has drawn support from prominent pro-life organizations, who view it as a necessary step to curb government overreach and protect First Amendment rights.

Senator Mike Lee has introduced a companion bill in the Senate, echoing concerns that the FACE Act infringes upon states’ rights and has been misused to silence pro-life voices. Proponents of the repeal argue that it restores balance and ensures federal laws are not used to suppress political or religious expression.

The bill has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further deliberation. While advocates of the repeal see it as a victory for free speech and the pro-life movement, opponents warn that repealing the FACE Act could jeopardize access to reproductive health services and increase the risk of harassment for patients and providers.

As the debate unfolds, the legislation has sparked heated discussions over the role of federal law in regulating access to clinics and the extent to which it should protect or restrict protest activities.
