In a Press Conference Friday Chicago’s Mayor Lori Lightfoot allegedly claimed that “crime is on the decline” in the Windy City.
Evidentially this, is not true. The Chicago Tribune has been tracking violence in Chicago. They claim that in Chicago 1,587 people have been shot this year. This is 195 more than in 2020.
The Chicago Sun Times reported that 78 people had been shot in Chicago just between Friday evening and Monday morning.
“All of our major indices show a decline in our crime and our homicides and our shootings year over year are down.” Lightfoot remarked.
The Chicago Sun Times also measured that there have been 317 homicides in Chicago as of right now, versus 302 by this time last year.
It’s unclear what “indices” the Mayor is using to measure homicides and shootings in her own city. It would be difficult to believe that both newspapers managed to get it wrong.
By the end of the year in 2020 there were 775 homicides. This number was 50% greater than the 506 homicides in the pervious year of 2019.
Even if homicide had dropped just below its 2020 rate it would be significantly higher than its average due to the 50% spike in that year.
