The story of Aurora Regino and her daughter is a sad reflection of the flaws in the California education system. Regino’s 11-year-old daughter, a student in the Chico Unified School District, underwent a gender transition process last school year, and the school officials offered her gender counseling without informing her parents.

Even though her daughter expressed a desire to inform her mother about the process, the guidance counselor ignored her request and  purposefully kept her in the dark about it. Regino’s frustration is understandable, given that the board weighed a measure that would allow for “more parental inclusion” but ultimately voted to keep the existing “parental secrecy policy” in place with a 3-2 vote.

This policy is “incredibly dangerous” as it keeps such situations a secret from the family, which, in Regino’s case, resulted in her daughter being bullied and not receiving the support she needed from her family.

Moreover, her daughter was outed within the school, and other people within the office knew her new gender and pronouns, which she hadn’t even told them. This created a very difficult situation for the young girl, who had to wonder how they even knew all on her own.

Regino, who is now suing the district for keeping her in the dark about her daughter’s identity and transition, is determined to speak out on behalf of her family and others with similar experiences. Her daughter is doing well now, but the struggle to advance parental rights in the area has been hard-fought.

According to Regino, the policy that board members voted to uphold extends to children as young as pre-kindergarten, who are approximately five years old, and reaches through the 12th grade. This is incredibly damaging, especially during such a tumultuous time in children and adolescents’ lives when they need parental guidance the most.

It’s unacceptable that children can receive gender counseling without parental notification, and it’s heartbreaking to hear that Regino’s daughter didn’t have the support she needed during such a vulnerable time.

The school district needs to revise its policy and prioritize the well-being of children by involving parents in decisions that impact their children’s lives. Parents must have a say in what is going on with their children, particularly when it comes to such important decisions as gender counseling. This is the only way to ensure that children receive the necessary support from their families, friends, and educators.
