As the countdown begins for the highly anticipated 2023 NBA Draft, there’s no doubt that the San Antonio Spurs have their sights set on Victor Wembanyama to be their top overall pick.
However, the real excitement begins after that first selection is made. In anticipation of the big night, here are five of my bold predictions for what could happen during the draft.
First up, the Portland Trail Blazers will trade Scoot Henderson. If Henderson is still on the board at No. 3, I believe that the Blazers will jump at the opportunity to build around him and Shaedon Sharpe while also moving off Anfernee Simons.
After all, history has shown that small, defensively challenged guards tend to struggle in the playoffs. Will it happen? The Charlotte Hornets, who hold the No. 2 pick, will have to let it happen.
Speaking of the Hornets, my second bold prediction is that they will overthink their No. 2 pick. They need to take Scoot Henderson or, if they can, trade the pick to the New Orleans Pelicans for Zion Williamson. New Orleans has their eyes on Henderson, and while it’s a risk for Charlotte, it’s one they need to take.
Moving on to the Orlando Magic, they will come out as one of the draft’s big winners. With the No. 6 and 11 picks, they have the chance to snag two top prospects or use one or both of the picks to swing a major trade. Either way, Orlando will be even more exciting to watch next season.
Anthony Black is projected to go top-10, but my fourth bold prediction is that he will be over-drafted. While he has great athleticism and size, his poor shooting skills are a major issue for any player hoping to succeed in the NBA.
Point guards like Derrick Rose and John Wall can get by without being great shooters, but it’s much tougher for mid-lottery guys like Black. Unfortunately, someone will likely take the risk on Black during the draft.
Finally, my fifth and final bold prediction is that the Dallas Mavericks will trade away their No. 10 pick. The team needs to give Luka Doncic some real help, and the top priority should be finding a player who can improve their defense. It will be interesting to see what kind of deals the Mavericks can make on draft night.
All in all, it’s shaping up to be a fascinating draft that’s full of potential surprises. The talent on the board this year is truly impressive, so it will be exciting to see which teams come out on top when the dust settles.
