Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde Calls for Compassion during Presidential Inauguration

A recent news item, ‘Bishop Urges President to Show Compassion towards Immigrants’ (published Jan. 22) was quite remarkable. While I typically find the religious representatives at inauguration rituals to be overly deferential to the incoming president, this event presented an unexpected change. My expectations were significantly amended when Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde stood her ground, raising her voice for values of kindness, dignity, and acceptance, written as the cardinal principles in the Holy Scriptures, as against scorn and rejection. That was a genuine religious perspective, and Bishop Budde deserves my sincere appreciation for sharing it amidst such crucial times.

Countless clergy across the nation stand at their pulpits every Sunday, delivering sermons on themes of fairness and compassion. You wouldn’t see us making headlines routinely, largely because our sermons do not propagate a wealth-centred divine doctrine nor do we align ourselves with the influential sections of society. Our approach may not be grandiose but it is sincere and dedicated.

Our mission is to propagate love and provide care to our congregation. We strive to bring about a positive change in community lives. From opening our doors for displaced people and providing respite for the homeless with soup kitchens, to organizing after-school programs for children and ensuring winter clothing for those in need – our work is driven by love and empathy.

Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, thank you for being an inspiring figure in challenging times. Your voice resonates with our mission and amplifies the call for compassionate actions. Your example reminds us that none of us are alone in this quest for justice, love, and mercy. This realization is indeed comforting and encouraging in present times.
