Biden’s Hollow Victory: Surpasses Trump by Just One Federal Judge Confirmation

Joe Biden, during a recent public speech, gloated over the assertion of having successfully assured the confirmation of 235 Federal judges, marginally surpassing Donald Trump’s record from his initial term. A seemingly desperate quest from Democrats to equal or exceed Mr. Trump’s four-year total, particularly as Biden’s presidency is seemingly losing its traction.

Although Biden beat Trump’s first-term total of 234 Federal judges barely by one, this minor win is his attempt to utilize it as a rearguard action against criticism aimed at his presidency, which from the perspective of many, has been lackluster at best.

Biden tried to present this judge confirmation as his means of safeguarding democracy. However, he fails to acknowledge that the appointment of these 235 federal judges, including one Supreme Court justice, is to representation for lifetime positions, threatening the neutrality of the judiciary.

In an indirect response to various reversals during his presidency, he vaguely stressed that his legacy would be about strengthening democracy and empowering individuals who will adhere to legal precedent. Yet, under his watch, the reversal of landmark decisions like Roe v. Wade occurred. Some might argue that this scenario more so underlines his inability to uphold essential precedents than anything else.

Biden attempted to paint a picture where these judges will preside over pivotal issues influencing the everyday life of average Americans. His remarks suggested that they would oversee regulations about American citizens’ voting procedures, questionable labor disputes, and environmental conservation strategies that protect the quality of air and water.

In Biden’s mind, these issues somehow needed the intervention of his judge confirmations. He seems to have forgotten we already had bodies in place to oversee these, where issues of labor regulation, for example, were addressed as far back as 1934.

Supporting Biden’s gloating session, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, and Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois, the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, were present. Biden jokingly brought up the so-called ‘heroic’ measures they had to resort to for securing the votes on his nominees last year.

However, this narrative blatantly omits the fact that this rush mainly showed President Biden’s single-minded focus to propel his own nominations, irrespective of the overall quality, merit, and long-term strategic fit of such nominees for the American people and the legal system.

While Biden interacted as if this intensive push proved his administration’s dedication to promoting diversity within the federal judiciary, the facts do not necessarily support this. Drawing attention to the statistic that roughly two-thirds of his nominees were women or people of color actually highlights Biden’s prioritization of identity politics over meritocracy.

This disproportionate approach not only compromises the integrity and potential excellence of the judicial system. It also undermines the reassuring credence that America’s legal infrastructure should be driven by the dedication, wisdom, and talent of its representatives, rather than their demographic backgrounds.

The essence of justice lies not in the origins or backgrounds of those who deliver it but in their ability to interpret law without prejudice or political pressure. The American public should question whether the Biden administration’s approach to judicial appointments meets these standards.

The spectacle of Thursday’s announcement only served to reinforce this viewpoint, making it clear that the Biden administration is flagging a misguided victory. It is centered on a quantity-based metric, rather than genuinely impactful milestones that would truly improve the judiciary system of the United States.

Taken as a whole, the attempt by Biden to pat his back on the confirmation of the judges comes across more as a desperate attempt at legacy-defining and exhibiting his power. However, in reality, this so-called victory raises more concerns than applause.

By making the appointment of these judges a centerpiece of his term, Biden has displayed his lack of substantial achievements to proudly flaunt, hence resorting to a mere numbers game. The irony is that the confirmations, rather than highlighting Biden’s achievements, bring forth his questionable approach to the judiciary.

One wonders whether these appointments will indeed empower democracy or are a thinly veiled attempt to further an ideological agenda. Judicial impartiality requires each member to analyze cases and interpret laws without any political bias, and whether these appointments can truly uphold these values is yet to be seen.

The manipulative framing by Biden does not overshadow the fact that the quality of the judiciary should always be paramount, letting meritocracy lead the way rather than succumbing to mindless diversity checkboxes. America deserves a judiciary solidified by objectivity, integrity, and intellect – whether Biden’s new judges uphold this standard remains questionable.
