The DOJ Files For Emergency Order Halting Texas ‘Heartbeat’ Abortion Law

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice asked a Texas federal judge to temporarily block the new abortion law that bans abortions after six weeks.

The DOJ recently sued Texas over the law because it’s being used to “prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights”.

As the strictest abortion law in the country, S.B.8 went into effect September 1 after a 5-4 Supreme Court decision. It allows private citizens to sue anyone who allegedly helps a woman get an abortion illegally.

Attorney General Merrick Garland called the law unconstitutional, stating “The obvious and expressly acknowledged intention of this statutory scheme is to prevent women from exercising their constitutional rights”.

Critics of the Texas Heartbeat Act say most women don’t know they’re pregnant before six weeks and the DOJ argues the act comes in conflict with Roe v. Wade.

Governor Greg Abbott’s press secretary Renae Eze responded to the lawsuit saying, “the most precious freedom is life itself. Texas passed a law that ensures that the life of every child with a heartbeat will be spared from the ravages of abortion”.
