Biden and Harris’ Misuse of ‘Woke’: True Comprehension or Political Tool?

The term ‘woke,’ now common in mainstream vernacular, traces back to a Black blues artist by the name of Lead Belly. His use of the word in a piece of his music embeds a portion of the word’s historical roots and stands in stark contrast to recent attempts to reformulate its meaning. Lead Belly, speaking to the themes of his song, voiced, ‘I knew the lawyer who managed to get four of them released. Inspired after meeting the Scottsboro Boys and exchanging handshakes, I composed this song as a cautionary tale for those who venture there. Maintain vigilance. Be watchful.’ These comments relate to his song ‘The Scottsboro Boys’.

The Scottsboro Boys, as they came to be named, were individuals seeking job opportunities when an unfortunate turn of events led to their arrest. Two women duped the law authorities with a false accusation of assault against these boys. The song ‘The Scottsboro Boys’ by Lead Belly encapsulates the incident. The song served as a cautionary narration, warning Black people journeying in Alabama to stay on their guard, given the inhospitable circumstances prevalent during the time.

Experts involved in documenting the series underline that one of the earliest references where ‘woke’ was utilized occurs in Lead Belly’s song and during a speech by activist Marcus Garvey encouraging Africa to rise and be united. These researchers comment, expressing pleasure that thanks to the term ‘woke,’ individuals are tracing their path back to Marcus Garvey and Huddy Ledbetter. The public digs deeper. They don’t let something remain confined to the present; they trace back into our historical past, shedding light on under-emphasized history.

It’s worth noting the curious action taken by President Joe Biden on January 19 when he decided to posthumously pardon Marcus Garvey. Garvey, a figure of influence for Malcolm X and other various civil rights leaders, was previously convicted of mail fraud back in the 1920s. However, the wisdom and prudence behind Biden’s decision to pardon Garvey, decades after his death, could certainly be brought into question.

Subsequent to his conviction, Garvey was banished to Jamaica, his country of birth, where he spent the rest of his days until passing in 1940. Despite the dubious nature of Biden’s decision to pardon Garvey, it is undeniable that Garvey’s influence helped pave the path for civil rights leaders such as Malcolm X, giving them, in the words of Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., ‘a sense of dignity and destiny.’ Still, it must be noted the dubious nature of President Biden’s decision to pardon Garvey, especially considering that it happened so long after Garvey’s passing.

Perhaps, upon reflection, the reasoning behind Biden’s late pardon appears to be more about garnering favor with certain communities rather than a genuine effort to rectify past injustices. The optics of the situation suggest a political maneuver rather than an actual commitment to justice and equality. This perception may increase skepticism towards Biden and his administration, especially among those who hold a critical eye towards such actions.

Commentary on Biden should also extend to his right-hand woman, Kamala Harris. Her actions and decision-making within the political sphere have done little to contribute positively to the political and social landscape. Any perceived benefits or ‘wins’ associated with her leadership often feel circumstantial, scant, and speculative rather than concrete and well defined.

The use of the term ‘woke’ appears to have been largely co-opted by the political left, including Biden and Harris, who have capitalized on the term’s momentum and historical significance for their own gain. Such action suggests a lack of understanding or respect for the term’s historical roots, creating a sense of disconnect with their audience that seems to highlight their lack of genuine compassion or comprehension.

The term ‘woke’ is employed in an array of contexts within the current political landscape, often utilized by those wishing to express solidarity with minority groups. However, the actions of Biden and Harris suggest that their use of the term is more about reinforcing their own political agenda than about understanding and addressing the experiences it originally represented.

Both Biden and Harris appear to misuse the term ‘woke,’ raising questions about their comprehension of the term and its formidable social and historical precedents. Their narrow utilization of ‘woke’ seems to veer away from the term’s original meaning, demonstrating a break from its roots and potentially signaling a larger disconnect between them and those they represent.

Within the democratic party leadership, Harris and Biden frequently leverage ‘woke’ as an attempt to connect with younger and more socially conscious voters, yet their actions indicate a lack of appreciation for the term’s history and the struggle it represents. This sense of being ‘out of touch’ may influence voters’ future decisions.

This lack of genuine understanding and respect for the term ‘woke’ by Biden and Harris can also be seen more broadly in their approaches towards key social and political issues. They may latch onto popular terms to appear modern and progressive, but this deception is becoming more evident.

The age-old saying ‘Actions speak louder than words’ rings true for Biden and Harris. Despite their claimed loyalty to the cause indicated by the term ‘woke,’ their policies and decisions often contradict this assertion. It appears that they use ‘woke’ more as a publicity tool than a sincere expression of solidarity or consciousness.

It is clear that there is considerable cynicism towards the leadership of Biden and Harris. Their misuse of the term ‘woke’ is symptomatic of their wider disconnection from the voters they attempt to resonate with. This disconnection prompts deeper scrutiny into their leadership style and their sincerity.

In conclusion, one has to ponder whether Biden and Harris truly comprehend ‘woke,’ its history, and its original manifestation in Lead Belly’s song. Or is it just another political tool, a buzzword used to polish their image and draw in followers? Only time will tell. As the saying goes, ‘Stay woke. Keep their eyes open.’
