In Oakland, California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, was assaulted by a homeless man who threw an empty water bottle at him on Friday.
Newsom was about to head into a pizzeria to promote supporting small businesses, until what authorities claim as he “was approached by an aggressive individual.”
The East Bay Times wrote, “Members of the Governor’s security detail removed the Governor from the situation, and the individual was arrested by CHP officers.”
California Highway Patrol (CHP) identified the man as 54 year old Serge Emanuel Benoit Chaumette Jr.
The Associated Press reached out to Chaumette’s sister who confirmed he is a homeless man with severe mental health issues and that this is “consistent with his past behavior.”
