Biden’s Callous Display of Cronyism Jeopardizes National Health

Having garnered substantial knowledge and insights from my decades-long involvement in academic medicine as well as serving as a high-ranking government official, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of integrity when it comes to governing. However, in a dishearteningly shocking turn of events, President Joe Biden, during the twilight of his tenure, displayed a reckless disregard for public interest. Splashing around pardons like confetti at a party and channeling federal money into questionable domains, Biden jeopardized the wellbeing of our large and diverse population.

In a startling decision made on the 16th of January, 2025, during the dying ember of Biden’s overcooked reign, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) played fast and loose with an extensive 25-year, $89 billion grant. The grant was torn out from the hands of Frederick National Laboratory in Maryland, a research institution renowned for its innovation, and instead, handed over like a golden gift to an organization with questionable track record, namely the Alliance for Advancing Biomedical Research tied to the University of California.

This rash and negligent decision placed the noble efforts of about 2,000 committed professionals involved in critical research about cancer, AIDS, and infectious diseases in Frederick, at great risk. An institution of proven effectiveness was stripped of the resources in order to prop up the lesser-accomplished entity. This unsettling move reeks of a web of cronyism, woven tightly around the University of California, intricately linked to a host of prominent California-based politicians, some of whom are rumored to harbor gubernatorial ambitions post-Biden administration.

The callous shifting of such substantial funds appears to be nothing more than a hasty bid to reward political affiliates rather than promoting the national interest. This display of quid pro quo could place upcoming administrators in a challenging situation in their quest to make evidence-driven and informed decisions. The cloak of darkness shrouding this move makes it even more unnerving.

The key actors in this political theatre add another layer of complexity to the scenario. Until the 20th of January, 2025, the Department of Health and Human Services, the umbrella organization of the NCI, was helmed by Secretary Javier Becerra, a former attorney general of California. He has proudly flaunted his support for the California University system and is speculated to be mulling over a gubernatorial bid in 2026.

Let’s not overlook Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who, too, has her academic roots in the UC law school and is allegedly considering the pursuit of a governorship. Another thread in the ever-winding fabric of Democrat connections, another silent beneficiary of this colossal, hasty redistribution of money and influence.

Disappointingly but not unexpectedly, this obvious political game-plan was cleverly veiled behind the rhetoric of jargon-induced statements, void of any tangible evidence or apparent data. This classic administrative smokescreen, designed to obscure the actual motivations and machinations of power, is reminiscent of George Orwell’s musings in ‘Politics and the English Language’. Orwell wrote, ‘A mass of Latin words falls upon the facts like soft snow, blurring the outlines and covering up all the details’.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee by President Trump touted to take the reins from Becerra, has vowed to engage head-on with any conflict of interest within the healthcare sector. It is clear that the dubious nature of this sudden grant reallocation rooted in political favoritism should be one of his primary targets.

It is only fair and just that such a controversial award be suspended or revoked until a rigorous, transparent audit of its merits is conducted. This could prove to be a significant stride towards cleaning the muddied waters of our healthcare system.

On the 5th of November, the citizens of America decided it was time to close the chapter on the Biden-Harris-Becerra administration. Allowing any vestiges of its antagonist policies, deeply rooted in cronyism and nonchalance towards public welfare, to remain would strike a blow to the democratic values that we hold dear.

It’s imperative that we rise above this steep descent into a politics of convenience and disregard for public interest. Our nation needs a recommitment to transparency, an assurance that the allocation of critical funding for lifesaving research is based on merit rather than a fruit of political genealogy.

This concern transcends partisan boundaries. It’s a defining American issue, hinging on the ethos of an effective government. As such, it’s incumbent on the incoming Trump administration to rectify these uncertain decisions and continue the necessary work of restoring public trust.

To do so, efforts must be made that it’s the people our nation’s medical research should serve, not a select handful of political insiders. With this commitment, we steer towards a more transparent, accountable, and effective administration, exemplifying the democratic principles this nation was founded upon.
