Senator Katie Britt: Laken Riley Act ‘Will Save Lives’

Katie Britt

The U.S. Senate is poised to pass the Laken Riley Act, a bipartisan bill named after a Georgia nursing student tragically murdered by an illegal immigrant. The legislation mandates that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detain illegal immigrants involved in theft-related crimes and grants states the authority to sue the federal government for inadequate enforcement of immigration laws.

Senator Katie Britt (R-AL), a leading sponsor of the bill, emphasized its significance in enhancing public safety and preventing future tragedies. She stated, “Laken’s horrific murder should never have happened. While we cannot bring Laken back, Congress can and must pass the Laken Riley Act to save American lives and prevent this tragedy from repeating itself.”

The act has garnered substantial bipartisan support, with key Democratic senators, including John Fetterman (D-PA) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), expressing their backing. Senator Kelly remarked, “Senator Kelly will vote for the Laken Riley Act and looks forward to working with Republicans and Democrats on it and other solutions to secure the border and fix our broken immigration system.”

The House of Representatives passed the bill with a 264-159 vote, including 48 Democrats in favor. The Senate’s advancement of the legislation indicates a strong likelihood of its enactment, reflecting a unified commitment to addressing immigration-related crimes and enhancing national security.

The Laken Riley Act represents a concerted effort by lawmakers to strengthen immigration enforcement and prevent future tragedies similar to that of Laken Riley. Its anticipated passage underscores the importance of bipartisan collaboration in addressing critical issues affecting public safety and national security.
