Makhachev Anticipates Lightweight Title Defense, Eyes Welterweight Championship

Much speculation surrounds Islam Makhachev and whether he will overshadow Khabib Nurmagomedov’s standing record of lightweight title defences. Clarity on this matter is anticipated to arrive on the 19th of January when Makhachev will aim to protect his title from Arman Tsarukyan. Trophies aside, the Russian champion has already expressed his interest in advancing towards the welterweight division.

A face-off between Makhachev and Ilia Topuria might be on the cards, but Makhachev does not appear particularly thrilled about this potential match-up. His ambition to become a dual division champion seems to take precedence. He is rather intent on seeking the welterweight championship.

From Makhachev’s perspective, the likelihood of facing off for the welterweight belt with whoever comes out victorious in the Belal versus Shavkat bout is higher compared to a fight with Topuria. While his step forward in the UFC remains shrouded in ambiguity, his aims for his forthcoming title defence are unequivocal and bold.

Meanwhile, he is leaving no stone unturned in preparation. His training regimen includes sessions with some of the most skilful fighters, with Khabib Nurmagomedov being one of them. Furthermore, Makhachev’s forthcoming fight will see Nurmagomedov as part of his supporting team.

Makhachev’s reputation as one of UFC’s most accomplished lightweight champions continues to be strengthened with every fight. As he approaches his fourth title defense, this time against Arman Tsarukyan, he can’t help but reflect on his past victories, particularly his win at UFC 302 against Dustin Poirier.

It was a nail biting five-round fight, ending with Makhachev delivering a spectacular finish using a D’Arch choke in the ultimate round. Rerunning moments of this combat, Makhachev acknowledges the errors he committed but appreciates the highlight reel it has created.

In his candid admission, Makhachev revealed the existence of injuries that forced him to take a break. He has now, however, recovered completely, and gears up to be the major attraction at UFC 311.
