Tom Homan, President-elect Donald Trump’s designated border czar, has unveiled plans for a large-scale deportation initiative targeting undocumented families, pledging that the process will be executed in a humane and compassionate manner. Homan’s remarks come as the incoming administration prepares to implement a more stringent approach to immigration enforcement.
Family Detention and Deportation Strategy
Homan outlined plans to house families awaiting deportation in specially designed “soft-sided” tent facilities overseen by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These structures aim to provide adequate shelter while accommodating the increased number of families expected to be processed. Homan acknowledged that additional facilities and resources would be necessary, with exact requirements determined by updated data assessments.
Addressing concerns about U.S.-born children of undocumented parents, Homan emphasized that families would have the choice to stay together during deportation or for parents to leave their children in the U.S. under legal provisions. “Parents who entered the country illegally knew the risks,” Homan stated. “This is about enforcing the law while ensuring families are treated with dignity.”
Focus on Unaccompanied Minors
The administration also plans to address the status of over 300,000 unaccompanied minors who entered the country illegally and whose sponsors have ceased communication with authorities. Homan expressed concerns about the potential exploitation of these children, including forced labor or abuse. “Our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of these children while maintaining accountability in the system,” he said.
Resource and Policy Shifts
Implementing this strategy will require significant resources. Homan estimated that at least 100,000 detention beds and a considerable increase in ICE personnel would be needed, with overall funding requirements surpassing $86 billion.
The incoming administration also plans to reverse key Biden-era immigration policies, including ending the “humanitarian parole” program, reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, and completing the southern border wall. Additionally, Trump’s team aims to revoke birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants, further tightening restrictions on illegal entry.
Humane Yet Firm Approach
Homan addressed criticism head-on, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to upholding human dignity while enforcing the law. “We are not about inhumane practices,” he assured. “Once the message is clear that illegal immigration will not be tolerated, we believe the numbers will decrease.”
