Luigi Mangione, 26, has been indicted by a New York grand jury for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and is now facing charges of first-degree murder as an act of terrorism.

The incident occurred on December 4, 2024, when Mangione shot Thompson in broad daylight in Midtown Manhattan as the CEO was on his way to attend an investor conference. The attack, captured on security cameras, was premeditated and calculated, leading prosecutors to classify it as terrorism under New York law due to its intent to intimidate and create public fear.

After a five-day manhunt, Mangione was arrested on December 9 in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Authorities recovered a 9mm handgun with a 3D-printed receiver, a homemade silencer, and writings criticizing the U.S. healthcare system. Law enforcement officials say Mangione’s frustrations with the healthcare industry were likely the motive for the killing.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the murder as a “well-planned and targeted” attack designed to provoke shock and attention.

Mangione remains in custody in Pennsylvania, awaiting extradition to New York, where he will face trial for the charges. If convicted, he could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case has sparked national attention and concerns about the rise of ideologically motivated violence.
