President-elect Donald Trump has lauded the resignation of FBI Director Christopher Wray, calling it a “great day for America.” Wray announced his decision to step down at the end of President Joe Biden’s term, a move that allows Trump to appoint Kash Patel, a former aide known for his loyalty, as the new FBI Director.
Trump expressed his approval on Truth Social, stating, “The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice.” He added, “I just don’t know what happened to him.”
Wray, appointed by Trump in 2017, has faced criticism from Republicans over the FBI’s handling of investigations involving Trump, including the 2022 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. In a town hall meeting with FBI employees, Wray explained his decision: “I’ve decided the right thing for the Bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current Administration in January and then step down.” He emphasized his intent to keep the FBI focused on its mission and avoid further political entanglement.
Trump praised his nominee, Kash Patel, as “the most qualified Nominee to lead the FBI in the Agency’s History,” expressing confidence that Patel would restore law and order. He also acknowledged the respect between himself and the FBI’s rank-and-file agents, stating, “They want to see these changes every bit as much as I do but, more importantly, the American People are demanding a strong, but fair, System of Justice.”
Patel’s nomination is expected to face scrutiny during the Senate confirmation process, given his close ties to Trump and previous criticisms of the FBI. Wray’s resignation and Patel’s potential appointment signal significant changes in the leadership and direction of the FBI under the incoming administration.
