Recently, my brother-in-law initiated a conversation within our family, whose political leanings largely veer towards left, about an intriguing political happening. He shared a news item concerning President Joe Biden exercising his presidential privilege to pardon his son, Hunter. The matter, which has predominantly sparked outrage from the both flanks of the political spectrum, revolves around the gross misuse of power by Biden to shield his son from the consequences of his actions.
Hunter Biden, put through the ringer of the court of law, was found guilty of tax evasion and other gun-related charges. Appallingly, the pardon comes after Biden explicitly stated that he would refrain from doing so. What was once interpreted as a mark of honor and integrity, and hailed as a testament to his self-discipline by misguided segments of the population, has now been exposed as a case of political deception.
The act of showering undeserved grace upon a convicted offender using one’s administrative powers is raising suspicions of corruption within the Biden administration and Democratic ranks. While the Democrats are grappling to defend this sudden volte-face, the Republicans continue to highlight the evident corruption.
Delving into Hunter Biden’s life story reveals a man continuously plagued by personal issues despite his privileged upbringing. His past studded with drug addiction and tragic personal losses, including the death of his mother and sister in a horrific car accident, has been public knowledge for a while. However, the American public’s fury stems from the fact that Hunter, who has led a life cushioned by his influential parentage, is absconding from the legal repercussions of his misdemeanors owing to the very same privileged birth.
Available documentation pertaining to his indictment details a disturbing image. It reveals an individual who has been leveraging his connections to fund a depraved lifestyle centered around drugs and illicit activities, even as recently as 2020. It’s fairly challenging to muster any sympathy considering the circumstances.
Yet undeniably, stories detailing the personal bond between Hunter Biden and President Biden have emerged. These narrate a relationship similar to countless other parental connections – complicated and fraught with love and concern. From messages of affection exchanged during Hunter’s stint in a rehabilitation center to the assurance of unwavering faith conferred upon a father by his son, the sentimental value cannot be dismissed completely. But it should not be used as a smokescreen to cloak political misdemeanors.
Presidential actions such as issuing unjust pardons clearly yields a prejudiced picture, where the principle of equal punishment for equal crimes is blatantly disregarded. Despite the severity of the charges, with some of them being arguably more serious than what an average American could potentially face, the pardon raises questions regarding the surely unfair shielding of Hunter Biden from the due consequences of his actions.
Whether such shielding is appropriate or not remains a topic of heated debate. Still, it cannot negate the fact that President Biden, swerving from his stance of maintaining ethical standards, chose to dismiss this speculation and acted solely on his paternal instincts, much to public disapproval.
In an unexpected turn of events, rumors hint at Biden considering issuing additional pardons for specific individuals, presumptively to guard them against perceived unfair persecution. Ironically, these amnesty gestures enshroud the potential recipients in an aura of guilt, fostering the impression of an implicit admission of wrongdoings. It begs the question, if they were innocent, why would there be a need for a presidential pardon?
Ideally, under extenuating circumstances, presidential pardons are used as an instrument of mercy, a chance at redemption for those found guilty of minor offenses. But the ongoing scenario only emphasizes the abuse of this gesture by Biden, keen on rescuing his son from his troubled situation.
Biden’s actions underline a manifestation of blind parental love obscuring his decision-making as a nation’s leader. His willingness to shrug off his son’s continuous blunders, regardless of the cost, only amplifies the concern about the overall message it sends to law-abiding citizens and the rest of the world about American justice.
The validity of Biden’s actions is heavily dependent on personal perspectives. Yet most cannot deny the ethical scrutiny this situation warrants, whether from a place of understanding parental emotions or from a stance of maintaining justice.
Clearing Hunter Biden of his proven crimes was not an act of presidential grace, rather an act of indulgence towards his child, albeit one that flies in the face of justice. His decision might very well be driven by affection, but his lapse of judgement serves as a flawed example of the nation’s highest office.
Despite its intent, this aforementioned act remains a political blunder at its core. Shouldering the burden of this misstep is the only option available for Biden since it was solely his misguided decision.
The leniency extended towards Biden for his mistake in this case, although tempting, remains questionable. It is crucial to remain vigilant against actions that compromise the inherent fairness of the American legal system, regardless of the individual in question’s stature.
