The search operation had been ongoing for six days when law enforcement authorities located Mangione. Besides the disturbing manifesto, the arrested individual was also discovered to have a firearm bearing a striking resemblance to that used in Thompson’s assassination. This evidence led to his detention by officers in Altoonta, which is situated 500km west of New York.

An attention-driven citizen, who happened to notice Mangione in the fast-food chain, provided the crucial tip that enabled his capture. This call instigated actions by the Altoona Police Department, leading to Mangione’s arrest under arms regulations. With the current suspicion around him, it is believed that Mangione is the key person of interest relating to the conspicuous, deliberate murder of Brian Thompson, UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, according to the New York Police Commissioner.

Mangione was found with a firearm defined by the New York Chief of Detectives as a ‘ghost gun’. This weapon, capable of firing 9mm rounds, was found equipped with a suppressor. The naming of ‘ghost guns’ stems from their assembly process, which typically involves the acquisition of parts via online platforms.

A compelling factor for many buyers of these ‘ghost guns’ is that these firearms are devoid of serial numbers, differentiating them from the conventional firearms manufactured by established businesses and procured from authorized dealers. Thus, they pose a significant challenge to law enforcement investigation and tracking.

Upon hearing about the arrest, New York investigators commenced their journey to Altoona. It was apparent, from his possessions, that Mangione seemed to harbor an intense antipathy towards the corporate sector in the United States. This incriminating piece of information aligned with the unexpected assassination of Thompson.

The fatal shooting of Thompson, a top executive at UnitedHealthcare – among the leading medical insurers in the country – occurred on a weekday, in broad daylight. The brutal act was carried out in full pulbic view and was caught on surveillance tapes. Thompson was attending an investor seminar in the Midtown commercial district when the dreadful incident transpired.

The lead investigators on the case reported that after committing the horrendous act, the suspect absconded from the scene on foot. Subsequently, he was seen utilizing a bicycle to reach Central Park following which, he was reported to have taken a bus from a terminal located in the northern part of the city. The particular terminal is a nodal point providing connections to other states from New York.

At present, the police have not proposed a definite motive for this chilling crime. Thompson is seen in the CCTV footage outside the New York Hilton Midtown when a man, his face concealed by a hood and a mask, approached him from behind. The assailant, then proceeded to fire multiple times at Thompson, who was 50 years old, causing him to collapse on the sidewalk.

In the aftermath of the heinous crime, a grey backpack was found abandoned in Central Park. Law enforcement officers believe it belonged to the perpetrator. The backpack contained a jacket and what appeared to be game currency from the famed board game, Monopoly.
