Biden’s Silence Post Defeat: Admitting Trump’s Undeniable Victory?

Following the disappointing outcome for Democrats in the recent polls, President Joe Biden has remained unusually tight-lipped. Despite previous remarks of a potential catastrophe for the state of American democracy under another Trump victory, Biden appears to have withdrawn from voicing his apprehensions about future implications for the country. A reflection on the reasons behind the Democrats’ poor performance in the polls is still yet to be forthcoming from him. In a short address in the Rose Garden that lasted roughly six minutes, two days post-election, the president’s only reference to the results was a call for unity as Americans, and an attempt to reduce political tension.

Since then, Biden has been mostly absent from the public eye. This includes his six-day tour of South America, which wrapped up on Tuesday. During this trip, his only public utterances amounted to brief preambular comments before official meetings, and a speech about climate-related matters during a visit to the Amazon. Even as the U.S. faces a critical period, Biden’s lack of public engagement may be creating a vacuum. However, it has also highlighted a newfound reality: the nation, along with the rest of the world, is transitioning away from his influence.

Biden’s allies have indicated that, much like the rest of the Democrats, he is internally digesting the election loss. Trump’s victory still feels recent, only a little over two weeks old. Biden has shown minimal public reflection about his part in the defeat and still has much to untangle. In his speech following the election results, Biden stated, ‘Campaigns are contests of competing visions. The country chooses one or the other. We accept the choice the country made. I’ve said many times you can’t love your country only when you win.’

Biden’s aides emphasize that the president’s commitment to following electoral traditions of a smooth transition and inviting Trump to the White House is significant. Ironically, this comes after Trump notoriously disrespected these traditions four years prior by attempting to vitiate the outcome of the election he lost. However, this doesn’t imply that Biden isn’t privately brooding over the results, despite his restrained public demeanor.

During Biden’s recent six-day visit to Peru and Brazil for a congregation with global leaders, he was absent from engaging in a routine press conference. This tradition has usually been an expected part of an American president’s itinerary during such travels. In Biden’s case, he hasn’t even indulged in an impromptu Q&A thus far with regard to the elections or any other significant topics. This clearly indicates his evasion from discussing the recent electoral upset.

In an intriguing development this week, Biden delegated the responsibility to French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to publicize his critical decision to relax restrictions on Ukraine’s use of American long-range weapons in the ongoing conflict with Russia. Whether this decision stemmed from an attempt to bypass potential scrutiny regarding his handling of international affairs or was simply a move to keep a low profile while recuperating from the election loss, remains to be seen.
