Minor Faces Gun-Related Prosecution Amid Underage Drinking Inquiry

A teenager who is only 15 years old potentially faces prosecution related to gun laws, his arrest stems from an inquiry into underage drinking. Late in the evening on August 27, officers from the Utica Police Department were actively patrolling areas which have seen a notable phenomena of recent gun-related conflicts, as described in an official police statement.

The officers on duty stumbled upon a collection of individuals, many of whom, due to previous investigations, were known to them. As per the Utica Police Department’s record, the majority of individuals in this group were minors, engaging in the consumption of alcoholic substances away from public view in an 800 block Court Street parking lot.

When the officers attempted to approach and engage in conversation with the gathering, a number of participants hurriedly departed from the premises. The Utica Police Department later stated that they were able to locate and identify many individuals who formed part of the fleeing group.

The law enforcement agency, aided by their K-9 unit named Vigo, pursued the route of the fleeing group. Vigo, who is specifically trained in detecting explosives, was instrumental in aiding the officers track down a loaded 9 mm gun which had been left behind during the hasty retreat.

As the investigation continued, on September 13, a 15-year-old young man was accused of committing two transgressions; being in unlawful custody of a weapon, as well as a firearm. The charges are heavy for someone as young as he is and represent some of the notable challenges law enforcement agencies face in keeping communities safe.
