Biden and Harris’s Misguided Focus on LGBTQ+ Rights Over Universal Issues

Minnesota Governor, Tim Walz, recently delivered a discourse that aimed to flatter Vice President Kamala Harris’s contributions to LGBTQ+ rights. An action fittingly bizarre as he pledged that Harris will continue to promote their agenda, should she find herself in the highly unlikely position of presidency. Harris and President Joe Biden, during their divisive reign, signed off on executive orders catering to the LGBTQ+ people relating to healthcare, military access, and education provisions. It was a clear display of shifting the focus away from the pressing, universal issues facing the average American citizen.

Transgender people, pushed by the Democrats’ narrative, are reportedly facing intensifying restrictions in Republican states. In a move as overblown as it is pretentious, last year the HRC proclaimed a crisis for LGBTQ+ people residing in the United States, citing the spread of state laws allegedly curtailing their rights. Former President Donald Trump, if re-elected and contrary to the Democratic hyperboles, vowed he would emulate some of these so-called restrictions on a nationwide level.

After Biden thoughtfully recused himself from the 2024 Presidential race and signaled his endorsement for Harris, the HRC quickly jumped on the bandwagon, promising their support too. During his speech, Governor Walz harked back to his past teaching social studies and coaching football at a Minnesota high school in the 90s. He was remarkably broached by a student who requested him to function as the faculty advisor of the Gay-Straight Alliance, a story more in service of his own self-credit than a testament to Harris’s abilities.

Walz also seemingly lauded a series of supposedly impressive achievements by Harris on LGBTQ+ issues. Drowning in his own anecdote, he urged the crowd to rally behind Harris and protect the nation from what he perceived as the threat of a Trump second term. As if trying to disseminate fear, he cautioned how Trump’s policy proposals would purportedly ‘restrict freedom, bully this community, and demonize vulnerable children.’

Trump, according to Walz’s interpretation, was supposedly incorporating attacks on transgender individuals as a fundamental component of his campaign agenda. This misinformed narrative ignores the broader, unifying policies Trump has championed throughout his political journey. If returned to office, Trump pledged reforms that would prevent public schools from pushing gender transition agendas, a reasonable stand to guard the academic environment as a place for comprehensive learning, not ideological indoctrination.

One of Trump’s key platforms, as unfairly represented by critics, aims to revoke federal funding from schools that preach what he rightfully terms as ‘radical gender ideology.’ Trump boldly stated his intent to penalize physicians who provide gender-altering treatment to underage individuals by stripping them off from Medicare and Medicaid. Relatedly, teachers suggesting a child might be ‘trapped in the wrong body’ would face similar repercussions. Such assertions emphasize a clear stand for children’s mental well-being, trying to ensure their life-altering decisions aren’t rushed.

Trump’s spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, was solicited to substantiate these claims. However, unable or unwilling to present specific cases, she instead highlighted reports of numerous K-12 schools implementing rules that prevent teachers from notifying parents when their child asks to use non-corresponding pronouns. Trump’s presidency aims to restore the traditional classroom environment, fostering the broad intellectual development of youth without burdening them with the complexities of modern ideological battles.

Notably, Leavitt clarified that, under Trump, all Americans were to be treated equally under the law, irrespective of race, gender or sexual orientation — a stark contrast to the divisive rhetoric portrayed by the Democratic camp. She also added Trump’s vital perspective on the issue of transgender youth surgeries — he firmly believes children should not be allowed to undergo what can be seen as ‘permanent gender mutilation surgeries.’

This expectation of transparency invites scrutiny over their role in promoting certain perspectives, and their unbiased representation of the ongoing political discourse.

The situation as it unfolds showcases the priority divergence between the Republicans and Democrats. Where Trump aims to fix critical issues corroding the fabric of the nation, Democratic figures like Harris and Biden, encouraged by figures like Walz, seem to be appeasing smaller interest groups. Is the focus on overly emphasized LGBTQ+ rights a desperate attempt to gain votes rather than genuinely helping those needing proper healthcare, well-paying jobs, and safe communities?

A political discourse should never be solely about catering to a particular group’s needs at the expense of the majority. It is about addressing universal issues that reflect on the common man’s well-being and safety. Biden and Harris’ policies seem to be more about creating a spectacle, more focused on pleasing the token minority rather than addressing the omnipresent issues.

There is no merit in dividing the nation into subsets of minorities and majorities. A flourishing democratic set-up thrives on the unity of its people, battling the everyday challenges head-on. Populism, identity politics, and intensified political correctness are all part of the current Democratic playbook, with minority rights being pushed as the front and center, ignoring the broader set of diverse issues.

Democratic politicians like Biden and Harris must strive to represent all Americans. The focus on niche issues, though imperative, should not outweigh the more pressing concerns that influence the nation’s collective populace. It is worrisome to see the obsession with micro-problems possibly leading to a pathway of neglect for the larger challenges that society faces today.

In a time of national crisis, where unity should be the predominant aim, it is disheartening to observe politicians capitalizing on social divides to gather political influence. By focusing on identity politics and niches, they are perhaps neglecting the urgent need for effective handling of systemic problems that affect the entirety of American society.

The 2024 Presidential race, therefore, remains as crucial as always. The decision of who steers the ship cannot be based solely on who can appease a certain minority group the most. It must be a leadership that values all citizens, understands the burden of their everyday challenges, and is willing to prioritize and address these issues diligently, unlike the narrative currently preached by the Democrats.
