Known as John Manard, aged 45, he passed away inside the confines of La Palma Correctional Facility, a privately-owned prison located in Eloy, Arizona. Manard, previously sentenced to a life term for a murder committed in a suburb of Kansas City, managed to escape his prison in Lansing, Kansas, with the help of Toby Young. Young, a married woman and mother of two, had a role within the prison of aiding inmates to train animals for potential life as pets in new homes.
