Memphis Grizzlies Matches Could Move to Bally Sports by 2024

The airing of Memphis Grizzlies matches could soon transition to Bally Sports by the 2024-25 season, marking an exciting development in the sports broadcasting landscape. This follows an agreement that the NBA and Diamond Sports Group have recently settled on, permitting 13 NBA regional sports channels with Diamond to locally distribute games. Notably, this arrangement also involves nine other NHL markets as stated in the documents submitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. Keep in mind that this decision is yet to receive approval from the bankruptcy court for it to be fully set in stone.

When the Grizzlies disclosed their schedule for the 2024-25 NBA season, Bally Sports was nowhere to be found as a broadcaster for either the preseason or the regular-season games. This omission is set to persist until the broadcasting decision secures necessary validation via a bankruptcy court. Nonetheless, the recent development observed on Friday bodes well for the Grizzlies, NBA, and NHL followers.

Acknowledging the importance of sustainable partnerships, a statement expressed gratitude for the continuous teamwork and long-standing alliances with both the NBA and NHL. The new agreements, involving NBA and NHL linear and DTC rights, signify another significant stride for Diamond and further encourages its advancement towards emergence.

The aims are clear: providing value for NBA and NHL collaborators, and maintaining quality service for local NBA, NHL, and MLB enthusiasts. Equipped with the certainty surrounding its content and distribution provided by successfully negotiating with key partners, Diamond is gearing up for a promising future.

The focus of the company remains, supported by its creditors, to complete its reorganization plan that upholds its emergence. The finalized plan will be presented before the court in due time. Back in July, Diamond Sports Group publicized that it had arrived at a distribution settlement with Comcast. This was an important step, particularly considering that Xfinity customers had been unable to view games since May.

Earlier this year, DSG marked a significant milestone when it entered a Restructuring Support Agreement with its largest creditors. The agreement was designed to develop a blueprint for reorganization by absolving Diamond of bankruptcy and ensuring the continuation of its operations.

A noteworthy part of this reorganization plan was the initiation of an investment from Amazon, who will stream games on Prime Video starting next season. The strategic move allowed Diamond to navigate through its financial challenges and carve out a path for a more stable future.

Bally Sports had earlier in March 2023 made its own move towards financial restructuring by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, alternatively known as reorganization bankruptcy. This strategic move enabled Diamond to keep its business operations running, with court approval for money borrowing soruces.

Under the current agreement, the Memphis Grizzlies, along with 12 other NBA teams, have their contract extending up until the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. The decision has sparked a variety of reactions across the league, leading to an interesting development with the Phoenix Suns.

Making headlines last season, the Suns, a former Bally Sports collaborator, made a drastic turn. They shook up the traditional broadcasting model by opting to air their home games via broadcast television, signifying a potential shift in trend for sports broadcasting.

This interesting move didn’t go unnoticed within the NBA. In an address to The Commercial Appeal, an NBA spokesperson revealed that two other former Bally Sports affiliates, namely the Dallas Mavericks and New Orleans Pelicans, opted out of extending their assurances for distributing games on Diamond RSNs.

Earlier this month, the Pelicans declared their intention to have their games broadcast on television. Meanwhile, the future action plan for the Mavericks remains in the dark. This makes fans and followers eager to see how the situation unfolds for these major teams.

As the preseason draws nearer, the Grizzlies are intensifying their preparations for their opener on October 7, against the Mavericks. The match obviously bears a weight of significance, kickstarting another frenzied year of tough competition and thrilling basketball.

The Grizzlies’ regular season sees its inauguration on October 23, with an away match against the Utah Jazz. All eyes will be cast on these adrenaline-fueled events, and fans eagerly await the thrill and excitement that they have come to associate with NBA games.

In a climate swirling with changes and progress, it remains to be seen how the new arrangements will influence the strategy of teams, the experience of fans, and the landscape of sports broadcasting at large.

All these developments above demonstrate just how intricate and rapidly evolving the sports broadcasting scene is becoming, especially when it involves widely followed sports leagues like the NBA and NHL.
