UFC Heavyweight Star Hamdy Abdelwahab Second Suspension Over Doping

Hamdy Abdelwahab, a hopeful star in the ranks of UFC heavyweights, has received his second consecutive suspension due to testing positive for external testosterone.

For those unacquainted, Abdelwahab, boasting a winning record of 3-0, made his notable entry into the UFC during UFC 277 in July 2022. His maiden bout was against Don’Tale Mayes which was organized on short notice.

Abdelwahab exhibited his prowess in boxing and wrestling, unleashing a torrent of blows on Mayes in their opening exchanges. However, his initial energy waned as the match progressed, impacting the final stretch of the fight.

Despite his apparent fatigue, Abdelwahab managed to pull off a split decision win (which was later invalidated). Fans attributed his noticeable exhaustion during the fight to the last-minute arrangement of the match and generally appreciated his addition to the heavyweight line-up, which was in desperate need of fresh talent.

Abdelwahab’s bright start did not last long though, as he was unexpectedly handed down a two-year suspension. Initially expected to end on July 30, the suspension period saw an extension of six months, further dimming his UFC aspirations.

The added half-year suspension comes on the heels of the original three-month sentence, further doubled due to his first breach. The UFC elaborated on Abdelwahab’s disciplinary action with a formal announcement on their official website.

Upon being notified by CSAD of the initial adverse findings, Abdelwahab provided evidence of his purchase, including a bottle of a dietary supplement. This supplement was purportedly obtained from a mainstream retailer found both in the United States and internationally.

However, despite the absence of any disallowed substances detailed on the product’s labeling, the supplement was not verified as being free from banned substances by a third-party testified by UFC ADP’s approved certifiers.

The UFC routinely advises its athletes to only consume supplements that have been validated by a third party and certified as free from any prohibited substances. This is part of their regulation education carried out among the competitors.

The Abdelwahab case stands as another reminder to athletes about the potential risks of consuming non-certified supplements which can lead to unanticipated violations, damaging their careers.

This incident marks a concerning trend in the sporting sector where rising athletes find their promising careers disrupted by doping scandals, often unintentional ones, due to the consumption of unverified health supplements.

These instances underline the importance for athletes to reaffirm their commitment to regulation standards and to tread with caution when it comes to supplement use. A parallel emphasis on comprehensive education regarding such regulatory norms is also highlighted as part of this unfortunate episode.

On the other hand, the diligent work by the UFC and its approved certifiers to maintain a fair fighting platform for all its athletes, further reinforces the integrity of the sport and its regulations.

As of now, there has not been any personal response or statement provided by Abdelwahab regarding the matter. It remains to be seen how the heavyweight contender will address and navigate this obstacle in his flourishing UFC career.

Despite unfortunate events such as these, the broader community of UFC and other competitive sports retain their hope for an increasingly stringent and clean landscape that prioritizes the health, career safety, and fair play of all its athletes.
